On Wednesday (26 June 2024), the North Atlantic Council decided to appoint Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte as the next Secretary General of NATO, succeeding Jens Stoltenberg. Mr Rutte will assume his functions as Secretary General from 1 October 2024, when Mr Stoltenberg’s term expires after ten years at the helm of the Alliance.

On 19 June 2024, the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict, the NATO International Military Staff (IMS) Office of the Gender Advisor (GENAD) hosted its monthly Deep Dive session on Conflict-Related Sexual Violence (CRSV) and the Gender Perspective. It explored how CRSV requires a comprehensive and multi-faceted approach encompassing policy development, operational guidance and coordinated efforts across both military and civilian spaces.

Representatives from NATO Allies and partners met last week in Denmark on the occasion of the 13th edition of the Clearing House on Defence Education hosted by NATO and the Partnership for Peace Consortium of Defence Academies and Security Studies Institutes, with support from the Royal Danish Defence College. The event brought together 111 participants altogether with 23 countries and 64 institutions supporting the efforts of NATO’s Defence Education Enhancement Programme. They took stock of the achievements made and shared views on the priorities ahead to boost cooperation in the defence education domain.

From 24 to 26 June 2024, the Chair of the NATO Military Committee, Admiral Rob Bauer, attended the US AFRICOM African Chiefs of Defense Conference in Botswana, where he delivered a speech on security governance and partnerships. The conference was organised by the US-Africa Command and brought together top military leaders from across Africa to exchange knowledge, encourage partnerships and foster collaboration in the field of security.

On Tuesday, 25 June 2024, the NATO Secretary General, Mr Jens Stoltenberg, will receive the Minister of Foreign Affairs of North Macedonia, Mr Timčo Mucunski, at NATO Headquarters, in Brussels.

On 20 June 2024, the Chair of the NATO Military Committee, Admiral Rob Bauer, attended the first Senior Executive Seminar (SES) at the NATO Defense College in Rome, where he delivered a keynote speech on “NATO at 75 and the Changing Security Landscape.” The SES focused on pressing military and security challenges directly influencing political decision-making in NATO. Panel discussions included Russia’s war on Ukraine, NATO deterrence and defence strategy and the Euro-Atlantic industrial capacity. The seminar is designed for senior advisors to Heads of State and Government in Allied nations and was opened by NATO Deputy Secretary General Mr Mircea Geoană.

Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg visited Ottawa on Wednesday (19 June 2024) to meet with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and discuss final preparations for the Washington Summit in July.

On 15 May 2024, the International Board of Auditors for NATO (IBAN) held a meeting with representatives of the Supreme Audit Institutions of NATO member countries to discuss the IBAN 2023 Annual Activity Report (AAR). The meeting also covered ways to strengthen cooperation between the Supreme Audit Institutions and IBAN, as well as other audit-specific topics such as audit methodology and the audit of international organisations.

Representatives of the NATO Defence and Security Cooperation Directorate met recently with officials from Azerbaijan’s National Defence University in Baku to take stock of the reform efforts undertaken by the country’s military education institutions within the framework of NATO’s Defence Education Enhancement Programme (DEEP).
